As Swine Flu Deaths Rise Worldwide, US Schools Brace For “Nasty” Flu Season

Following a recent World Health Organization (WHO) report that over 1,000 of 1,154 people who have died worldwide from the 2009 H1N1 swine flu pandemic were in the Americas, schools in the US brace themselves for a “nasty” flu season. 338 (nearly one third) of the deaths were reported in the last week of July, of which more than 300 were in the Americas.

Over 15,510 Bird Flu A(H1N1) Human Cases Confirmed Worldwide, Including 99 Deaths

The WHO (World Health Organization) reported yesterday evening that the total number of swine flu A(H1N1) confirmed human cases of infection has exceeded 15,510, including 99 deaths. The real figure is higher because there is a delay between local health authority reports and the WHO global report. The A(H1N1) influenza virus is nowhere near as virulent (aggressive, dangerous) as was originally feared. Experts say it is not more deadly than normal seasonal human influenza.

Tighter Surveillance Of Swine Flu In Pigs Needed Worldwide Says CDC

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that there is a “global need for more systemic surveillance of influenza viruses in pigs”, during a press briefing where they explained the findings of a recent study on the genetic and antigenetic properties of the new 2009 H1N1 swine flu virus.

New H1N1 Cases Continue To Rise Worldwide

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cases of the new H1N1 swine flu virus are continuing to rise, with more countries infected and 5 more deaths in Mexico, where the vast majority of fatal cases have occurred so far. As of early Sunday morning 06:00 GMT, the WHO bulletin showed that 46 countries have officially reported 12,515 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection, including 91 deaths.

4,379 Swine Flu Cases Worldwide, And 46 Deaths, Says World Health Organization

According to an update issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) today, Sunday 10th May, there have been 4,379 confirmed cases of human infection with swine flu (H1N1), and 46 deaths. All the deaths have occurred in Mexico 45, USA 3, and Canada 1. Mexican authorities inform that the rate of spread within Mexico is significantly slowing down. However, experts say it is too early to say the outbreak has turned for the better.
