Vaccinating Children For Flu May Help Prevent Transmission, Protect Those Who Are Not Vaccinated

Immunizing children and adolescents with inactivated influenza vaccine resulted in reduced rates of influenza in their community compared to a similar community in which children did not receive the vaccine, suggesting that vaccinating children may help prevent transmission of the virus and offer protection for unimmunized community residents, according to a study in the March 10 issue of JAMA…

HPA Statement On Possible Transmission

The HPA is working with colleagues from the Public Health Service of Wales to investigate a number of possible cases of person to person transmission of oseltamivir resistant swine flu. To date, a total of nine H1N1v confirmed cases have been reported amongst patients on a hospital ward in Wales. Five of these cases are known to be resistant to oseltamivir, one is sensitive and for three resistance status is presently unknown.

Government Of Canada Takes Further Measures To Help Reduce H1N1 Transmission In Communities

Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq announced further measures that the Government of Canada is taking to provide Canadians with the information they need to protect themselves against the H1N1 flu virus. This week, the Government of Canada will launch radio ads to remind people to practice regular infection prevention behaviours — wash your hands, cough and sneeze into your arm, keep common surfaces clean and, if you have symptoms of the flu, stay at home to avoid infecting others.

Flu Virus Ill-Suited For Rapid Transmission, But Researchers Say New Strain Bears Watching, Could Mutate

A team from MIT and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found a genetic explanation for why the new H1N1 “swine flu” virus has spread from person to person less effectively than other flu viruses. The H1N1 strain, which circled the globe this spring, has a form of surface protein that binds inefficiently to receptors found in the human respiratory tract, the team reports in the July 2 online edition of Science.

Migraine Mice Exhibit Enhanced Excitatory Transmission At Cortical Synapses

New research is unraveling the complex brain mechanisms associated with disabling migraine headaches. The study, published by Cell Press in the March 12th issue of the journal Neuron, reveals that perturbation of the delicate balance between excitation and inhibition may make the brain more vulnerable to migraine attacks. The brain mechanisms that cause debilitating migraine headaches are not well understood.

Calling For Increased Research In Flu Transmission To Prepare For Pandemic Flu Outbreak

Researchers at Rhode Island Hospital have completed a study to better understand the impact of infection control measures during a possible flu pandemic. Their study focused on the likelihood of the transmission of flu from individuals showing no symptoms (asymptomatic) or from individuals who are infected but have not yet exhibited symptoms.
