Government Of Canada Takes Further Measures To Help Reduce H1N1 Transmission In Communities

Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq announced further measures that the Government of Canada is taking to provide Canadians with the information they need to protect themselves against the H1N1 flu virus. This week, the Government of Canada will launch radio ads to remind people to practice regular infection prevention behaviours — wash your hands, cough and sneeze into your arm, keep common surfaces clean and, if you have symptoms of the flu, stay at home to avoid infecting others.

FDA Takes Actions On Darvon, Other Pain Medications Containing Propoxyphene

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is taking several actions to reduce the risk of overdose in patients using pain medications such as Darvon and Darvocet that contain propoxyphene. The actions were taken because of data linking propoxyphene and fatal overdoses. The agency is requiring manufacturers of propoxyphene-containing products to strengthen the label, including the boxed warning, emphasizing the potential for overdose when using these products.

US Takes Stock Of H1N1 Situation

After roughly a month of emergency response to the new H1N1 swine flu virus, US health authorities are taking stock, re-focusing and re- assessing priorities. This was the main theme of the press briefing that Dr Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center of Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gave earlier this week.

HHS Takes Additional Steps Toward Development Of Vaccine For The Novel Influenza A (H1N1)

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced today that the department will take important steps necessary to prepare for potential commercial-scale production of a candidate vaccine for the novel Influenza A ( H1N1). The Secretary is directing approximately $1 billion in existing funds that will be used for clinical studies that will take place over the summer and for commercial-scale production of two potential vaccine ingredients for the pre-pandemic influenza stockpile.
