Statement By Medicare Rights Center President Joe Baker On Release Of Preliminary 2011 Payment Rates For Private Medicare Health And Drug Plans
The good news in today’s announcement is that, unlike in past years, the coverage gap in the Medicare drug benefit-the so-called doughnut hole when consumers must pay full price for their medicine-is not expected to grow in 2011. For technical reasons related to how the drug benefit parameters are calculated, the coverage gap will actually shrink by $10…

Participation rates and representativeness of African Americans recruited to a health promotion program
When using community-based participatory methods to develop health promotion programs for specific communities, it is important to determine if participation differs based on sociodemographics and the extent to which program participants are demographically representative of the target community, especially when non-random recruitment methods are used. We evaluated rates of participating in a health promotion program among African American residents in an urban community and determined if program participants were representative of community residents in terms of sociodemographic factors. While participation in the program was modest, participation did not differ based on psychological factors or body mass index. However, individuals who were unemployed were significantly more likely to participate in the program compared with those who were employed. Our sample included a greater proportion of individuals who only had a high school education compared with community residents but was similar to community residents in terms of gender, marital status and employment.

Medicare Advantage Rates Could Go Up, While Part D ‘Exceeding Expectations’
Seniors on Medicare Advantage plans could pay more in premiums, while Medicare payments for drugs, dialysis and power wheelchairs get mixed reviews. “Despite near-zero inflation and recessionary conditions, health insurers in 2010 face another year of double-digit increases in the charges they pay for hospital services, physicians, drugs, and other healthcare costs,”

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has taken important steps to minimize disruptions in drug coverage and to ensure a choice of drug plans for low-income people with Medicare. As a result of CMS’s actions, low-income people with Medicare in all parts of the country will have a choice of at least four drug plans, and one million low-income people with Medicare will be able to keep their current zero-premium drug plan next year.

“Louisiana will start paying less money Tuesday to many private health care providers for taking care of Medicaid patients, a move the state health department estimates will save $86 million this year,” The Associated Press/The Advocate reports. Adults in the program may also have to pay a small co-pay if they visit emergency rooms for non-emergency care.
