New study finds 70 percent of able-bodied hockey players have abnormal hip and pelvis MRIs

Seventy percent of healthy professional and collegiate hockey players had abnormal hip and pelvis MRIs (magnetic resonance imaging), even though they had no symptoms of injury, according to a new study. The study’s surprising findings could serve as a warning for surgeons to not depend excessively on imaging when diagnosing patients.

15 years after ACL knee reconstruction, 84 percent of male patients still highly active, study says

Eighty-four percent of males who had ACL knee (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction with a patellar tendon (the tendon that attaches the knee to the front of the tibia or shin bone) graft continue at a high level of activity 15 years later, according to a new study. Additionally, these patients have not developed severe osteoarthritis and their knees remain stable.

Shingles Raises Risk Of Stroke By 30 Percent Or More In Adults, Study Finds

Adults who develop shingles are about 30 percent more likely to have a stroke within a year than adults who don’t have shingles. When the shingles infection involves the skin around the eye and the eye itself, the risk of stroke may increase more than four-fold. Survey Shows Nearly 40 Percent Of Americans Reel From Heel Pain

While foot problems such as bunions, corns and dry, cracked skin affect many Americans on a daily basis, one particular ailment — heel pain — stands out among foot disorders, according to a new survey by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). The 2009 APMA survey, which polled close to 420 Americans aged 18 and older, found that 39 percent of adults have experienced heel pain more than any other foot ailment within the last 12 months.

20 Percent Of Hospitalized Medicare Patients Readmitted To Hospital Within 30 Days

One of five Medicare beneficiaries discharged from the hospital is readmitted within 30 days, and half of non-surgical patients are readmitted to the hospital without having seen an outpatient doctor in follow-up, according to a Commonwealth Fund-supported study in the New England Journal of Medicine. All told, unplanned rehospitalizations cost Medicare $17.4 billion in 2004, the study says.
