CMS Proposes More Accurate Payment Rates For Medicare Skilled Nursing Facilities In Fiscal Year 2010
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed adjustments to fiscal year (FY) 2010 payment rates to better reflect the cost of caring for Medicare beneficiaries in nursing homes. The rule calls for payments to Medicare skilled nursing facilities to be reduced by $390 million, or 1.2 percent lower than payments for FY 2009. This adjustment to nursing facility payments is an effort to rebalance an earlier adjustment to the case-mix indexes (CMIs).
CMS Proposes Fy 2010 Payment And Policy Updates For Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a proposed rule on April 28, 2009 that would update payment rates and clarify the framework for Medicare patient selection and care in inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRFs) during fiscal year (FY) 2010. The proposed rule would apply to more than 200 freestanding IRFs and over 1,000 IRF units in acute care hospitals, and would be effective for discharges occurring on or after October 1, 2009.

U.S. Census Bureau: Medicaid Tops Funding For Nursing And Residential Care Facilities
Medicaid continued to be the largest source of funding for nursing and residential care facilities in 2007 at $59 billion, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. These tabulations come from the 2007 Service Annual Survey: Health Care and Social Assistance, which focuses on health care and social assistance providers for individuals, and gives estimates and sources of revenue for businesses with paid employees.
