Some parents weigh ‘hastening death’ for children in extreme pain with terminal cancer

1.46 Million Working-Age Vets Lacked Health Coverage Last Year, Increasing Their Death Rate, Harvard Researchers Say

A research team at Harvard Medical School estimates 2,266 U.S. military veterans under the age of 65 died last year because they lacked health insurance and thus had reduced access to care. That figure is more than 14 times the number of deaths (155) suffered by U.S. troops in Afghanistan in 2008, and more than twice as many as have died (911 as of Oct. 31) since the war began in 2001.

The Alabama Department of Public Health was notified this week about the death of a man in his 50s from Cherokee County who tested positive for 2009 H1N1 influenza. This brings the total number of deaths of persons with H1N1 influenza in Alabama to 17. Previous deaths of persons positive for H1N1 influenza have occurred during 2009 to residents of Bullock, Calhoun, Dale, Houston, Jackson, Jefferson, Macon, Madison, Mobile, Montgomery, Russell and Talladega counties.

This brings the total number of deaths of persons with H1N1 influenza in Alabama to16. Additional Alabama Death Linked To 2009 H1N1 Influenza

The Alabama Department of Public Health has been notified about the death of a woman in her 50s who resides in Dale County. Specimens showed she tested positive for 2009 H1N1 influenza. The widespread incidence of 2009 H1N1 influenza in Alabama and the eight known deaths in the state serve as reminder of the need for everyone to take steps to prevent transmission of disease and to be immunized for both seasonal and H1N1 influenza when vaccine becomes available.

US Swine Flu Death Toll Includes 36 Children, Report

Federal officials reported this week that at least 36 children have died in the US as result of the 2009 pandemic swine flu virus A(H1N1), two thirds of whom had one or more high risk medical conditions. Over 90 per cent of the children who had medical conditions had neurodevelopmental disorders such as developmental delay or cerebral palsy and health-care professionals are urged to be aware of the potential for more severe illness, including death, among these children.

Swine Flu-Related Death In Wales

A woman who tested positive for swine flu has died in Wales, the Welsh Assembly Government confirmed last Friday. The 55-year-old woman from Caerphilly County Borough was admitted to the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport on 2 August. She had been ill with flu-like symptoms prior to her admission. She tested positive for swine flu on admission and received a course of antivirals.
